All of you who are saying AT&T bought Cingular are wrong. Here's the scoop:

1) Cingular, a BellSouth/SBC company, bought out AT&T Wireless in 2004, integrating the networks and such. AT&T Wireless is now gone.

2) BellSouth/SBC bought out AT&T. However, they decided to keep the AT&T name because literally everyone in the world recognizes it. But "the new at&t" is actually SBC/BellSouth.

3) BellSouth/SBC decided to create unity and changes Cingular's name to at&t. Again, this is still Cingular, but going as at&t now. Those of you with old AT&T wireless phones will still need to get a new phone and service plan from this new at&t. I know its confusing. And one final note... at&t (Cingular) is NOT AT&T Wireless back again from the dead. AT&T Wireless is never coming back.

Exactly that: that the Cingular brand will disappear in favor of AT&T. Sounds complicated, since a while ago Cingular had bought the wireless arm of AT&T. But that was before AT&T was bought out by SBC, which took AT&T as its own name, then bougth BellSouth, which owned the other half of Cingular Wireless that SBC/AT&T didn't have.

It means that the games mega-corporations play to increase their quarterly profit statements for their stockholders continues. A couple years ago AT&T became the new Cingular with customer service virtually nil because of the seperation of departments bettween AT&T and Cingular. I tried to upgrade my plan to include my girlfriend at the time and found out one needed to be an acrobat to jump through the hoops that would entail. It's just another jive advertising campaign to fool us into thinking that "Raising the Bar" isn't really placing the bar further up your...well, I think you see the point.

AT&T Purchased Cingular and is removing the Cingular brand from the marketplace, replacing it with AT&T. AT&T have been marketing themselves as "The New AT&T" for some time now.
