I'm going on a 2 week holiday soon and am wondering what books to read.
I am 31 years old and like science fiction and fantasy (but NOT Harry Potter!)

I've tried reading the first Harry Potter book and just couldn't get into it.

As I said earlier I tried to read the first book and have seen all the movie versions and out of the 4 movies the only that I really enjoyed as a movie was Prisoner of Azkhaban and am in no real hurry to read the rest of the books.
Thanks to all those who have suggested books so far.

Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien, Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, and A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin. The last one is the first book in an adult fantasy series, and it comes across as a little more realistic than most fantasy novels. I liked it quite well, and I hope I can soon find time to read the others.

Blindness by Jose Saramago.
It has the same brutality of Lord of the Flies, and the same affliction as Day of the Triffids. Blindness was the best novel I read last year. It is about an epidemic of blindness in an unnamed town (could be anywhere) and what happens to a small group of people who band together as EVERYTHING falls apart around them. Human beings can be monsters. This book scared the shi* out of me. An amazing book.

Angelhair and Until Then are 2 books in one continuing thriller of a story you might like to check out. The author is a new one and his name is Joseph Noga. You can web search him if you want. The books were real page turners and I just can't tell enough people about them, so hey check them out and if you like them do the same. Enjoy and have a good holiday!

Starship Troopers by Heinlein, Foundation series by Asimov, Fahrenheit 451 by Bradbury, 1984 by Orwell, If all else fails try grabbing a random book off the shelf and start reading, you never know what undiscovered gems are out there.

Try the Voyage of the Jerle Shannara Trilogy by Terry Brooks, It is about 1200 pages between the 3 stories. They are very good stories though

Try Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood... it's an eery take on the future, with an amazing view of genetic engineering. Atwood writes brilliantly, and makes the science fiction seem real.

Try reading some Geoff Ryman novels:
I really enjoyed "The Child Garden" and am currently reading "Was".
You might want to dip into some of his short stories as that might be more condusive to holiday reading. You'll need to find a copy of "Unconquered Countries: Four Novellas".
You also might want to try Michael Marshall Smith's "What you make it". They're very short, very impacting stories.

The Perks of being a Wallflower. i think of the author#s Stephen Chbosky. This e book became truly mind-blowing/ i could no longer placed it down and the protagonist's perceptions have been astute and deeply moving in places. this is somewhat darkish for holiday analyzing in some components however the uplifting bits in others truly make it worth analyzing.

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
...Harry Potter is a load of nonsense which is limiting reading by sequence.
