I never labeled myself when I was a teenager. Why is it so important to be an emo kid or a scene kid or a hardcore kid? What does this even mean? I was in highschool only 6 years ago and none of these phrases even existed.

They are trying to find a connection in the world . Somewhere they fit . They want to be part of a group.

Lables existed but they were not self posted at the time. I remember calling the other groups or "clicks" by names. And they have had these names since before time out of mind. Probably the more hairless cave men had some nickname as they started to evovle.

People now are taking on a nickname or joining one of the afore mentioned clicks because they want control over what people think of them.

If I were to fit in and join the cheer leader click I may have an agenda such as goody two shoes or cvampus slut (you pick). If I join the Emo's then I want to advertise that I am mistreated and really need a healthy release for my emotions and yet have none. Or I just like goofy make-up and scowling allthe time... But at least I have you thinking what I want you to think about me.

I think If I were still in school (some eight years out now) I might be an Emo Cheer Leader...lol... Certainly I was aiming for ONE of the cheer leader standards but I had so many problems at home some release would have been a God-send.

It's not important to be labeled. People are labeled by other people. I'm in highschool right now and we really dont care that much about the labels at my school, I hang out with everyone from the 'preps' to the 'emo kids' or whatever other labels there are.

I agree with "star of fla" - they are trying to fit in somewhere. Seems like the labels may have been standardized since I was in school, but that they have always been there - from lables that were not really said out loud, just understood - cheerleaders, jocks, rednecks, to flat-out labels that get thrown around till you're sick of hearing them - emos, preps, whatever else... Different categories, but the same old labeling. It's kind of like they are trying to make sense of their world by deciding "he belongs here, she belongs there, and I'm right here..." If you can put a label on people, you (think you) know where they stand, and where you stand in relation to them, and it also serves as evidence that you belong somewhere, with someone if you have a label - you won't be alone. I guess you just have to be careful what label you allow to be "stuck" on you! imho
