I can't answer the question, but it makes sense. Eggs are associated with fertility.

We in Slovakia paint eggs with traditional colourful patterns or now there are more modern forms of egg decorating, like copper wire embroidery or fine patterns crocheting.
Our Easter Monday folk traditions are, however, very "barbarous". Boys pour glasses or even buckets of cold water on girls (more modern and more cultivated form of this is pouring perfume). In some parts of Slovakia instead of this they beat girls with plaited willow twigs. Girls are then expected to be happy with this (which we are certainly NOT) and to reward them with the decorated eggs, money and some traditional meals including some spirits, which can sometimes result in even more aggressive behaviour of the boys.
I have always hated Easter because of our folk traditions and tried to hide somewhere or pretend not to be in.

In France, parents hide chocolates eggs in the garden and in the morning kids are looking for its. The story says that "flying bells" are dropping the chocolates eggs the night before.
And every body end up sick of eating chocolates...

Easter eggs are dyed red in Greece because of Jesus and blood. It sounds gross, but it's about that and spring.
