I think that would depend on which American you talk to. I personally prefer most anything else.

We Will soon see, given the labor problems. Made in the USA has some to do with it, Also nothing like the sound of a Harley.
Partly a major marketing success story. I am sure someone has done a lot of research on they Harley story. I even know someone by the name Harley Davidson. His parents surely were great bike enthusiasts. Hope you get lots of replies

Americans love Harley Davidson enough to make it to where they make as much money on selling HD merchandise as they do selling motorcycles.
They make a really nice bike, but I stick to Jap bikes for the simple fact that I could buy 2-3 of them for what one HD costs. My Suzuki Boulevard is shaft driven, fuel-injected, and water cooled - fast around town, but cruises nicely down the highway too. Comfortable, powerful, and most importantly - easy on the wallet.
I might pick up a Harley someday, but for a lot of people it is just a brand name more than a motorcycle. That's why they have a two year waiting list for their more popular models. My wife's stepdad used to be a religious harley rider, but he has switched to jap bikes too, simply so he can go down and buy one without either waiting two years, or having to pay ridiculous mark-up.
Whatever your preference though - the most important thing is to get out there on two wheels and ride. Be careful!!
