I can't believe that people are inhumane enough to use the sticky traps. Those are shear torture for the mouse. It takes several days for it to die. Do you really want to listen to a mouse screaming for help, waiting for a slow painful death?
It is an urban legend that having a cat in the house will keep mice away. I also know that from experience because I have cats and have mice come in most years. The cats might play with them, but they have never killed one. Okay, so maybe they are defective cats, LOL.
If you really want to use the no-kill traps, you can try them. Most people report that they do not work. Even if they do, won't that contribute to the mouse population? Personally, I would prefer to kill them humanely.
The regular cheap wooden based traps work quite well. They are fast and efficient. They almost always kill the mouse instantly and without any pain. Some newer versions have a plastic base, but I like the wooden ones. Easy, simple, painless, and they work. Use peanut butter as bait, not cheese.
Have you tried peanut butter as bait inside a live catch trap? If that doesn't work, I would try chocolate. They seem to like that too.
P.S. to cherrybomb: How do you think those sticky pads work? They kill the mouse by trapping it so it will die of thirst. You can not remove the mouse once it is stuck to the pad. It is a terrible way to die. They are very inhamane.

A simple simple device follows:
You will need:
a CLEAN 5 gal bucket
a small can with a plastic lid
some thin wood strips
string
Poke a hole through the center of the bottom of the can and the center of the lid. Smooth the hole out so that it does not have cutting edges.
Thread the piece of string through top and bottom of the can.
Attach the string to the edges of the bucket so that the can hangs horizontally below the rim of the bucket
place the bucket so that the rim is level with the edge of a counter where you know the mouse will crawl. Be sure to leave a little space between the counter and the bucket
Build a bridge with a wood strip that goes fromthe ocunter to the bucket and overhangs the edge of the bucket.
place another wood strip from the overhanging strip down to the can, such that it rests on the edge of the can
Place some food on the other end of the can.
now when the mouse smells the food, it will walk across the bridge, down the incline and onto the can. As soon as the mouse gets on the can, the can will spin, and Mr. Mouse will be trapped on the bottom of the bucket. The sides of the bucket must be clean orthe mouse will claw its way out of the bucket.
When you trap a mouse, you can transport it in the bucket to release at a place of your choosing.
If you want to make this a deadly trap, fill the bucket with a few inches of water. The mouse will drown.

You might need a more tempting bait in your live trap. I've found that mice tend to like Cheerios, or try spreading a tiny bit of peanut butter on a piece of cracker.
I've had great success with this live trap in my house:
http://veganstore.com/index.html?stocknumber=266
It’s also available for $2 cheaper here (although I prefer to buy it from the other place since I’m not a big fan of PETA):
https://www.petacatalog.org/prodinfo.asp?number=HP200
I've caught over a dozen mice with it so far and it can be used over and over indefinitely. Or, you can try making the free homemade humane trap described here:
http://www.helpinganimals.com/wildlife_livingWithMice.asp
If you do live trap mice, please be sure to check the traps several times a day and release the mice promptly, approximately a mile away from your home. It is much more cruel to allow a mouse in a live trap to slowly starve to death than to kill it quickly with a snap trap. When you release the mice, do it in an area with some sheltering bushes or plants. If you are a kind person, you might also leave a little bird seed or oatmeal for them, along with some shredded paper towel for bedding.
The most unkind traps are glue traps. Mice have been known to gnaw off their own limbs and tear off their skin in an effort to escape, as they starve or dehydrate to death or suffocate in the glue. It can take three to five days for them to die. Poison isn't any better, as the mice die slowly and painfully from internal bleeding. It can take up to a week for them to die, and then they smell as they rot behind your walls.
Thank you for wanting to be kind to the mice! Good luck!

To catch that mouse, I would recommend using a have a heart trap and putting some kind of food inside it. You can try using dry cereal, or something like that. i have problems with rodents all the time, because I live in the country so, have fun.

Get a mouse trap and put peanut butter on the trigger. Works everytime for me!! Or if you don't want to kill it, get some of those sticky pads and put some peanut butter on them. They work well, too!!

Funny you should ask! We just had the same problem and the smart mouse wouldn't go in the traps at all. We even got desperate and put down the sticky traps, but he wouldn't go near those either. Did you put some type of food inside the trap? Supposedly peanut butter will attract them, but it didn't work for us. I didn't want to kill it either, but in the end my cat got it. :(

If it won't go in, then I recommend the ones that kill it. Those work very well. You can also use the sticky traps. Kill it quick cause it may be reproducing as we speak plus they carry diesease. One less mouse is a good thing.

We tried everything to try and humanely catch the "mouse" in our house- but the key word here is "mouse" - while you are trying these nice methods, your "mouse" is turning into "mice"!!!!!!!! Honestly, I've tried everything, and when it comes down to it, killing one is easier then having to kill 20 in a few weeks!

Mice can have babies every three weeks or so. Two mice can turn into 25 in a hurry. They are vermin and you need to kill them. Releasing mice somewhere else is a big problem for someone else. They carry disease and that kills humans.
