Your computer uses a part of the hard drive to store information about the websites you visit and the programs you use. This information is known as the "system cache" and it's made up of cookies, temporary files, and your personal internet history. It's like a roadmap that makes it easier to re-visit these places. Your computer doesn't have to search the entire internet to find Yahoo Games (for example), it's right there on your hard drive as a cookie, or a temporary file, or in your history.

But over time (sometimes daily), websites change, programs get updated, and the info stored on your hard drive becomes stale (old). Every once in a while you just need to throw out the old stuff and replace it with fresh (new) info. And the great thing is, you don't have to do anything. Once you dump the old stuff, your computer will automatically find and save the newest stuff. BTW - "stuff" is a very technical computer term! :-)

From your desktop with no other programs running, click the Start button > Control Panel > double click Internet Options. A dialog box with several tabs will appear. On the General tab, click Delete Cookies, Delete Files (including offline content) and Clear History, one at a time. Say OK/yes when asked. Restart your computer and you've cleaned your cache.

There's also two more tools you can use to help your computer run better. One is called Disk Cleanup and the other Disk Defragmentation. From the desktop click the Start button > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup / Defrag. Do Disk Cleanup first. Your computer will be scanned for stuff that can be safely removed. Then you'll see a box so you can check mark the stuff you want removed. You can check everything and run the scan. Be patient. After the Disk Cleanup you can do the Defrag. This can take a few hours if you've never done it. But your computer will thank you.

plrr
