No, they can't pregnant; they lay eggs. The female will develop eggs, lay them, and the male fertilizes them.
Breeding goldfish is not difficult, but you need a proper set up.
First of all, because they are so difficult to tell if they are male or female, you need to start with a group of goldfish. And because goldfish are such big, messy poop machines, you need a large tank to accomodate them. Goldfish breeding is best done in ponds, but if you want to try your hand at breeding fancies, you should start with 5-7 of them in a 100 gallon tank.
They breed best when coming out of winter (so, now is a good time - but you won't be able to breed until next year unless you can find some adults). You can trigger spawning by doing a large water change and giving them some really good food.

So, they aren't hard to breed, but there's a lot to know. Get a book on raising goldfish for more details.
If a large set up is too big for you, consider returning the goldfish and getting some guppies, platies, swordtails, endlers or mollies; those are even easier to breed and they DO get pregnant and have live babies.

Gold fish are egg layers, and with or without a male, they can and will lay eggs. The eggs will not be fertalized without a male, so if you are looking into breeding goldfish, get a male gold fish.

Sexing the goldfish, can be tricky. the female anal openings are much larger than the males. They are larger, protrude slightly and is round in shape. The anal fin is thicker and has a heavier first anal fin spine. The males will produce tubers when ready to spawn.

Knowing the sex of your fish is the key to breeding. If you are only looking at two fish be sure the one you have is actually a female, but with nothing to judge it against this could be rough.

A few things to consider: When breeding gold fish, is your tank big enough to accomodate all the fry? What will you do with them once you have them?

Gold fish reproduce rapidly in outside ponds. Remember gold fish are pond fish and require 1 square foot of surface water per inch of fish. They may quickly out grow the aquarium you have planned for them.

Good luck.
Remember, most pet stores will purchace back bread fish for credit towards other items or fish.
