the original coat has worn off the metal and now it rusts. Can I spray them with something that will match and and is safe.? I use egg beater, potatoe masher and slotted spoon.

where does one get things re-chromed, an auto paint shop?

Actually, you are looking for re-plating and you can look it up in your area's yellow pages. They will usually sandblast off the rust and dunk the piece in their plating tanks. I don't suggest doing this yourself because it is a highly toxic process regulated by the EPA.

Rust and food preparaion do not mix!

Re-chroming is very, very expensive in relation to the item you are trying to rehabilitate.

Weighing the costs and benefits, you may want to go to a few Garage and Yard Sales and pick up replacements for daily use. If your collection is substantial and has monetary value (because you have it insured, for instance), then you might want to re-chrome and display your treasures. That way you can continue to enjoy them for a much longer time.

If they're valuable antiques, re-chroming them will destroy their value. We use very old, worn utensils every day. They never go into the dishwasher and we dry them immediately after they are washed. Rust isn't really a problem. If you want , you might rub a little vegetable oil into the metal after they dry and store them in a dry cloth.
