To protect American citizens from radical Islamic terrorist who hate us for not believing in their God and their way of life. I don't think that it is a hidden agenda,,, though ,you seem to have had a hard time finding it. So now you know.

Power. He wanted to be remembered by history as a great world leader. Unfortunately in the process he created another Vietnam when he wanted a WWII and he abandoned America when we needed leadership the most. He will be remembered, but not the way he wanted to be.
