Its a nice town by the seaside, pretty calm. The weather is mild and damp, snow is extremely rare, summer is generally very warn, but there's always the breeze. Varna is the third most expensive city in Bulgaria, after Sofia and Burgas, but the cost of living is generally lower than anywhere else in Europe (a beer/cup of coffee - 50 cents; 1 kg potatoes - 40 cents, 1 kg chicken - 2 Euro, bread - 30 cents). There's a lot to see around but it depends on what you are interested in. I recommend Balchik and its botanical garden, Aladzha monastery, Cape Kaliakra. In the city itself there are remnants of Roman baths. Good shopping and nightlife.
The people are friendly and direct, generally louder that the Brits, but not as talkative as Italians. If you go - do not trust too much those who impose themselves on you. Varna is a resort and, as any busy place, attracts the regular number of jerks, especially during the summer. Normal people will be as restrained as normal people in the UK. You can also expect people to be helpful as they know you are a foreigner.
One more tip - if a restaurant is full of locals, you can be sure they serve very good food :)

Yep I have been there. Well, passed through the place . Weather beautiful and the people are very friendly indeed. Bulgaria is stunningly beautiful.

Young Bulgarian women are very good looking indeed.

You need to watch out for one thing though. They nod their heads to mean NO and shake their heads to mean YES, which can lead to some amusing situations.
