I was awakened this morning to the desperate howling of one of my cats. I assumed she was upset about the coyotes in the woods, but when I got up to make a phone call, I saw my other cat playing with something on the floor. Because we've been chopping wood, I thought it was a small piece of bark. But when it hit the kitchen floor, it was silent, so I figured I better check it out. Lo and behold it was a little critter! It looks like a teeny tiny mouse body, only with a shorter tail, and the face is almost microscopic with a long nose, almost like a mole or possum, teeny bits for eyes and teeny ears.

It's a dark gray/brownish color, measuring maybe 2 inches long (not including the tail.) Could this be a baby vole, or is it something else?

This is a shrew-also known as a vole-I trap them professionally-they are a family member of the mole-in that they are insectivores-meaning they catch and eat live food-mostly earth worms-yes yours was probably a young one but they only get to be about 3-4 inches long

Here's info/pic on a vole: (to me looks just like a mouse...)

And a mole: (scroll down further for pic)

Probably a baby mole maybe? but I thought they lived underground??? Do a search on your state's wildlife page, should have all the critters common to your state listed somewhere on there.

It's a shrew. They are very hard to catch in mouse traps because of their small size.

Think they're voles.
Garden pests mostly & do'nt come into house ,maybe the cat brought it in.
Cats will keep them away.
