I... feel... old...
They were biggest, I'd say, in the early 80's. They are best known for the song Roxanne, but had a significant number of popular songs.
They were a mix of rock, pop, reggae ("white reggae" was how they were referred), ska, and a bunch of other things.
Sting, the lead singer (and author of many of the songs) still performs. His solo music is more mellow than the Police, but has the same spirit.
Yeah, if you're 20, you weren't born when they were big.

Hell yeah!! They were huge in the early 80s. They were a trio with Sting on lead vocals and bass, Andy Summers on guitar, and Stewart Copeland on drums. Sting of course went on to launch a well-known solo career, but the others have made solo careers too and are busy with one project or another. The Police had an odd mix of punk, reggae, pop, and other stuff that progressed over the years.
Hits include "Roxanne", "Every Little Thing She Does Is magic", "Every Breath You Take", "Don't Stand So Close to Me", "Spirits in the Material World", "Wrapped Around Your Finger", "Message In A Bottle" and a few more.
They broke up in 1986 after a long break and trying to make a new album. But they've reunited a couple of times since then (a private party, the Rock n' Roll hall of fame induction, Grammys)
If you buy anything from them, buy the box set "Message In A Box". It contains every album and B-side of theirs. Next best bet would be a single-disc compilation like "Every Breath you Take - The Singles" or "Greatest Hits".

they were and are a great rock bank from the 1970's and 80's. they had hits like roxanne, watching you. sting , the lead singer and the band broke up in the 1990's and he went on to have a solo career.
the reason there is so much talk about them now, is that 2007, is the 30th yrs anniversary of their first hit, roxanne. and that they finally put their differences aside and did the opening act on the grammy's with this song.
now i remember going to their concerts back in the day, and sunday performance of the song, was the shorter version i had ever heard sang, and you can tell none of the guys wanted to be on stage together.
go to itune, or limewire or whatever other place you listen to music online, and sample some of their songs, you will be surprise if you actually like some of their stuff, it is classic rock. but it is awesome.

The Police are a three-piece English rock band, who were strongly influenced by reggae and ska music. Coming to prominence in the wake of the punk rock phenomenon, they rose to become one of the most popular groups in the world in the early 1980s. After 23 years, they reunited on February 11, 2007 to perform as the opening act of the 49th Annual Grammy Awards.

The Police were a new-wave band that formed in the '70s that went on to become one of the best-known bands of the '80s before splintering due to infighting. Their early music had a strong reggae flavor to the beats. Their best-known album is their final (to date) studio disc, "Synchronicity," which also harnessed the power of the music video to bring attention to this disc.
Some of their best-known songs include "Roxanne," "Wrapped Around Your Finger," "Don't Stand So Close To Me," "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" and "Every Breath You Take".
Sting (the bassist) has had a successful solo career, while guitarist Andy Summers and drummer Stewart Copeland have done a lot of work with film scores.
