Why do we, in this culture (western civilization) believe that men and women are meant to live together in some kind of symbiotic balanced relationship? People believe you have to search for a "compatible partner" and then you will stick together forever like positive and negatively charged magnets.

Has anyone ever considered that this is actually not natural, and when you look at the history of human relationships you very very rarely see this sort of thing in most cultures?

Marriage was the church's idea...part of having control over people and dictating how they were to behave and think AND to help keep track with paternity of children.

Relationships are quite normal for the human species...it's monogamy and the idea of being with one person "forever" that has been taught to us and didn't come naturally.

Fifty years ago, it was inconceivable for someone to live happily as a singleton. Now, it's finally possible, but not enough people are doing it. In an age when both men and women have financial independence, too many children are being born daily, and half of all marriages end in divorce . . . what's it all good for?

Yes, this idea has been considered by various sociologists. The evidence suggests that monogamous relationships (with periodic infidelity) are in fact the norm for most human cultures.

It is not "natural". Human nature is self-centered. We love ourselves and so we will love those who please us. God's love is selfless love. In this tension between human nature (pride) and God's love (humility) we create forms of culture to imagine a false stability. Other false ideas of western civilization is that divorce will make you happier. We want quick fixes because we are selfish and don't want to change.
