"Ten-hut" is the gruff abbreviation of the word "attention," that's all. It's what comes out when a drill sergeant shouts the command, easier to say at full shout than "attention." It literallly means the command, "Come to attention!"

Abreviated from 'Attention" the two syllables were noted for bringing a group of soldiers to 'attention' at the exact same moment.

Like a conductor who raises his baton to get the orchestras attention so that they may begin together, the first syllable "TEN" (or even "a tennn") is given lower audibility to get the group's focus and the "HUT" is forcifully almost shouted as the indication when they all should "Snap To" or stand at 'attention' at the same moment. Ten=Get ready....HUT...Snap To Together as a group.

It's just the way it comes out when it's said loudly, forcefully, and often enough to be abbreviated. Other examples are "hi" or "hi'ya." That's "how are you." And, when kids are finished with a game of hide-and-go-seek, "Ollie, Ollie, incumfree" is "All ye, all ye, in come free."
