Hey all, I am going to have my first ultrasound next week, I will be 16 weeks pregnant, Is it possible they might tell if it is a boy or girl? I had a friend that found out she was having a boy when she was 16 weeks, but was just wondering how common this is.

They should be able to give you an indication of what the sex is but this isn't 100% accurate, so keep that in mind if they give you an answer.

While ultrasound can be performed at any stage of pregnancy for the purpose of finding out the sex it is best done between 18 and 26 weeks. Most care providers will not give an ultrasound for the specific purpose of finding out the sex, and the American College of OB/GYNs has issued a statement against routine ultrasound exposure during pregnancy. However, most physicians do not heed this warning. Adequate studies on ultrasound safety have not been done, but we do know that ultrasound exposure can change the way the cell reproduces and moves. There have also been studies indicating that ultrasound heats up the cells. This method is the most frequent for finding out the sex of a baby, however, it is the least accurate. Accuracy depends on several factors: baby's cooperation, gestational age, technician's ability, etc

depending on how the baby is positioned you may be able to tell. I found out at 18 weeks. also keep in mind the ultrasound is NOT 100% and they are more likely to be incorrectif the say you are having a girl...
Though i have met a few mom's that were having a boy and ended up with a jessica, marie, or sara.
congradulations!

the typical ultrasounds are 'fairly risk-free' meaning they do no longer pose a 'significant' danger to the infant. the advantages easily outweigh the hazards. although, you will desire to no longer have ultrasounds except mandatory as they easily are no longer without danger. undergo in strategies years in the past additionally they theory x rays have been risk-free.. those days a minimum of maximum docs do permit you comprehend relating to the hazards of ultrasound. a minimum of mine did. 4 remains interior risk-free limits. yet stay removed from those new 3-D ultrasounds.. they use a mega dose of ultrasound and that they do no longer seem to be risk-free. there has been plenty controversy and actually some places are refusing to do them, purely the greater income oriented places. circulate forward and characteristic this ultrasound... 4 is effective.

I was able to tell my son was a boy from the 8 week ultrasound. I know that isn't common, but I saw a penis! The quality of the ultrasound machine was very high. I believe it was a new machine very state of the art.

It depends on the equipment and your doctor's experience. But, it is possible. Just mention you'd like to see if you can find out. Usually they're really nice about it...and it's fun for them too.

at 16 weeks they told me with both of my pregnancies that i was having a boy. if you are having a girl you may still be told that its a boy at this time, but after another 3 weeks you will know for sure

They were able to see my little guys sex at 14 weeks. It was only about a 70% chance she was right...but she said she has never been wrong, especially if it is a boy. It all depends on position. My little guy was spread eagle, so we got lucky!!! The next one at 20 weeks, he was actually holding himself (I know embarrassing), so we def. knew he was a boy!!!

Good luck!!!

By this time they should be able to see the genitals and tell you, they just can't say they are 100% certain.
Sometimes the baby is not in the right position and you can't see at all.
