No way that's just stereotyping - I've lived here all my life and of all the other countries I've been to the closest comparison to it is England and Ireland. Just seems like everyone's down on the "ugly" American kick nowadays - blaming us for all the problems in the world. If you truly want rude take the chunnel and go to France.

When I was in America I found people to be very polite, but they were mostly in the service industry and I felt a lot of it was forced and insincere. I mean, this "Have a nice day!" that all shop workers say is so false!
I found the average American to be pretty much the same as the average Brit - you get friendly polite ones, and rude surly ones.
I also find it's worse in the big cities (eg London/New York ) where everyone is so busy with no time to say Hello.
Older people also seem to be more likely to say hi to a stranger.

It completely depends on which city you are in (and which people you walk by). I've lived in both countries and I've met truly nice people and really nasty people in both America and Britain.
