Your answer is quite simple. It goes with the first thing that you learn in Business 101 class:
Q. What is the purpose of a business?
A. To make money.

Notice it isn't to give others jobs. It isn't for the well being and development of others. Money. Plain and simple. Now couple that with another lesson taught in Business 101 class:
Q. What is the number one expense in the majority of businesses?
A. Employees.

Between the two, a business will seek to raise its profit while minimizing its expenses. Result: jobs moving overseas where #1 expense is lower. As a conservative, I hate to see government interfering with businesses, but Americans losing jobs is also not good (and not the President's fault, BTW). There needs to be some law that stipulates that when 90% of a company's business is in America, their workgroup must consist of 90% Americans. Of course, that would raise prices, unless you couple that with tax breaks for corporations that hire more Americans.

Just because someone doesn't speak English doesn't mean that they are not American. True, there are immigrants from other countries here who come here and don't know English. It is hard to learn a language without someone to teach them. There are not many programs who teach foreigners the local language. It is this country's fault for so many immigrants. At the end of the 1800's, this country advertised itself as the best thing to ever happen to the world, and opened it's doors to the rest of the world. Nowadays, there are few countries in this world that aren't doing so well, including Mexico. So they come here to get jobs, but most jobs now won't hire unless you have so much experience and education, none of which is offered in Mexico, and the only jobs that don't require it is fast food. Maybe this country should start teaching them English instead of criticizing them for not knowing it automatically, and teach our English speakers other languages like Spanish, Chinese, and French, and then we could get way better jobs with that knowledge. Someone who speaks English and Spanish would be picked first in a job interview, even if they have the same qualifications, just because an employee will be more productive and effecient if he knows more than one language. And let's not forget, even in this country among the 'Americans', there are alot of people who can speak it perfect, but cannot type in proper English.

Because the "service" in "customer service" is apparently something many employers no longer care about. I can't even TELL you how many times I've had an order of fast food prepared wrong, because the cashier/order-taker didn't understand me correctly, even though I was careful to speak slowly and clearly. It's a waste of my time, and a waste of the restaurant's money, to keep getting food orders wrong like this. :( How much food will restaurants have to waste, and how much business will have to be lost (due to customer aggravation) before restaurants WAKE UP and realize that they need to increase their English competency requirements?

For the record, I have nothing against immigrants or people from other countries. On the contrary, I think it's GREAT that they're working and not sitting around trying to collect money from the government. I admire them for what they're doing. I just think they sometimes need a better command of the language before they take a position that involves constant interaction with English-speaking customers.

You are correct..welcome to the global economy of the 21st century. It can be much cheaper to hire someone who doesn't speak English because in some cases, the employee is just happy to be working in the USA, and will accept ANY wage, even if by our standard is low. So someone would scoff at 21k per year, while someone from outside the US would think they are rich. It is a growing problem for people just trying to work and battle the cost of living.

The best defense a person can have is education. Having a masters or even PhD is something most people can not or will not achieve. Educate yourself, and you will do well!

A lot of jobs seem to hire people who doesn't speak English because no body has been applying to those jobs in customer service especially in the food industry. So, whoever is the manager of that food place that you go to for lunch/dinner is desperate for help. All these jobs pay the minimum wage when nobody can afford to buy stuff on the minimum wage anymore.

It isn't that business do not want to hire people who speak English. It is that too few qualified workers are applying for positions, and those that do have unrealistic expectations of what they should get paid. I have seen people requesting $18 an hour for warehouse work. No business person in their right mind is going to pay you $18 an hour to move boxes from one side of the building to another when they can get someone else to do it just as efficiently for $10.

Another problem is that many "English" speaking applicants have no work ethic. They come into interviews and the first question is "how many sick days do I get?" And believe me, they will take every single sick day they can, plus their vacation. Because for some reason people equate "sick day" with "vacation day." They come to work late, try to leave early, schedule doctor's appointments in the middle of the day, etc etc etc. Meanwhile, an immigrant comes here really WANTING to work. Many of these folks actually take far more pride in their work than their "English" speaking counterparts.
