I am a first time mother and going tomorrow so my son can get his first shots. What should I expect afterwards, or what do I need to know to make it easier on him?? I am really nervous for him.

I'm not sure which vaccinations your son will receive but it's safe to say that his pediatrician would have instructed you on what to do beforehand IF there was something you could do beforehand (administer tylenol, etc.).

That said, your son will cry when he gets the injection in his thigh. And, to be perfectly frank, you probably will, too. I did when my daughter got her first vaccination. My husband was with us and I remember him holding the both me and the baby for several minutes after the injection. :-)

The good news is, your son will get over it quickly -- certainly by the time you nurse him or give him his bottle.

Peace to you and the little guy. You'll do just fine.

My son just got his first shots a couple weeks ago and all went well. The only advice I can tell you is to get some baby Tylenol and give it to him about a half hour or so before you go to get the shots. Then continue to give it to him for a 24 hour period and keep and eye out for fever or any reactions he may have. I am sure he will be fine so don't worry :) My son did just fine and the only thing I noticed is that he slept really good for couple days afterwards.

I'm assuming you're well educated and doing this because it's best for your family. I personally am dead-against vaccines.

If they will allow you, nurse your baby during the injections. This may help keep him stay more comfortable.
DO NOT GIVE HIM TYLENOL BEFORE. Some may say that this is helpful, but doing so could mask any reactions that you want to know about.
If your baby cries for extended periods, do not let your doctor brush it off, this could be a warning signal for brain damage and any subsequest shots will yeild a more negative reaction.
Don't leave your baby alone to sleep for at least a month after, my friends baby died in his sleep a week after his 2mo shots.

**If you are at all unsure of what you are about to do, WAIT!!! You can take your time to research and begin later if you even decide to.

Give him a dose of Tylenol a couple of hours before you go. That way he will already have the fever reducer in his system and that also helps with the pain in the injection site. Keep giving him the Tylenol through the next morning.

Give infant paracetamol about half an hour before your appointment time.
Expect him to be clingy, and perhaps have a slight temperature for a day afterwards, and perhaps slight redness on the injection site.
Other than that, there will almost certainly be no problems.

When I took my daughter for her first injections, I had to have my partner hold her, I seriously cried more than my daughter did- she kind of screamed initially and cried for about a minute...I was still mopping up my tears for about ten minutes afterwards, and the nurse who injected my daughter was kind enough to give me a tissue and a little hug, whereas my partner was just wondering why I had gone mad!

Give him tylenol befor you leave for doctor this will help. He will scream intially, but once you pick him up and calm him he will be ok. Make sure you put him in comfy clothes. I suggest a shirt and a pair of sweat pants. That way they are easy to slip on after his shots, he won't want to sit still for to long. His legs might be tender for a few days. He might get a fever but you can use tylenol for that. I gave my daughter tylenol befor because the doctor said that this would be best it helps prevent fever and will help with the pain. The leg they gave her tetnaus (SP?) in was a little sore for about 3 days but I was just careful when bathing her. I found a warm facecloth or bath helped calm her when it was tender. Good Luck.

Don't worry about it. Everything will be fine. I was SUPER nervous when Josie went to get her first shots. There will be about 2 minutes of crying and then he'll probably be exhausted and sleep a lot for that day and part of the next, but he should be alright. Josie liked it when I held her and rocked her. It made her feel secure and helped her relax.

Buy some arnica to rub on the injection site. This will help prevent him getting a big bruise or knot in that area.

If they want to do more than on injection, consider breaking it up to different visits instead of all at once.

Nurse him WHILE they are doing the vaccination. It acts as a natural pain reliever and he will be less likely to notice or be upset.

some mothers arent into medicine, but it works. when i took my baby to the get her first shots, her legs were sore and swollen. he will most likely cry then and later on. the infant tylenol can help with that. its pain reliever. he will be back to normal in 2 days. dont worry though.

be sure to ask the doctors opinion. Good luck!

They do it quick, so it is over as quick as they start. He will probably get 3-4 shots, but some they can combine. (One is usually a three in one, and then a single.) Honestly they best thing to do is get some infant Tylenol drops and the doc will tell you what dosage.
