Yes. Which is why I thought that the character of "Corporal Apum" I believe it was, was sooooo stupid to do...he only got his friend killed needlessly...he should've been slowly killed himself...and if it's not the same guy..well who cares, he shouldn't have let a "Nazi" live...

Yes, it is the same guy. That's why the German soldier didn't kill Oppum when he was coming downstairs after killing the Italian soldier in Oppum's squad.

Oppum gets even later when he captures the same German in a group of five, and shoots him when the German calls him by name.

ADDED: And if you want definitive proof, then I suggest you check the credits of the movie. Anyone who has an on-screen speaking role MUST be listed in the credits, and if you look at them you'll see that there is NO separate listing for another character, namely, the one coming down the stairs. In both parts of the movie, this character had speaking roles; he would therefore be listed in the credits as two separate characters IF there were two separate characters.

It was the same character both times; hence, no second listing.

Now, somone out there who is upset at being proven wrong will say something silly like, "they don't always list them if the actor says not to!" Which is true, but I highly doubt that an aspiring actor who has a part in a Steven Spielberg production would NOT want his name listed.

No. There was clearly no recognition between the two of them.
