I love rodents and have had pet mice and rats. But every hampster I have ever had has been mean and nasty. They have bitten and hissed at me. I have NEVER had an aggressive mouse or rat. Even the so called "sweet" hamspter are evil!

They are part of Satan's plot. (I don't know!) I have never bothered with rodents. Dogs and Cats are more my style. I have a little miniature dachshund and he is fun.

Hamsters suck. I love rats, mice not so much. Ive never ever ever been bitten by a rat, but ive been bitten by many mice. id still take a mouse over a hamster though.I think personally its a matter of intelligance, rats can understand how nice it is to be cuddled and held and petted, hamsters want nothing to do with being petted, i dont think its because they are evil animals, i just dont think they are very smart in that way.I will never ever get a hamster for my child, she will grow up with rats.much easier to teach a child to handle and respect an animal who doesnt bite their fingers!

You've just had bad luck with them - I've had many hamsters over the years, and I've only ever had one nasty one - she was just horrid, I wound up taking her back to the pet shop and exchanging her! The key is to get them as young as possible, and handle them a lot, give them treats from your hand, talk to them so they are used to your voice - males tend to be easier than females, too. Don't give up on hamsters, they can be wonderful little critters!

I think it's the same reason small dogs bark so much -- fear. The whole world is bigger than you so you have to always be on the defensive. People can be that way, too.
