Not *everyone* is trying to be like them, mostly just teenagers, but also throw rock stars and rappers into the mix. A lot of "preps" and such have a lot of "friends" they only know superficially. It's been going on forever, but what your describing is the typical "popular" kid or those around them in the clique. I was a social butterfly in highschool and would go to multiple tables at lunch where the goth/punk kids would sit over here, the Christian kids would sit over there, the nerds/geeks would sit out there... and so on and so forth. I had friends in multiple circles and didn't really fit in any particular group. (There weren't any emo kids while I was in highschool... wow, I feel old!)

P.S. community colleges keep this up, but most universities are so huge that it really doesn't matter. You'll get to know people in your major and have some classes in common with others, but it really is a different beast.

Part of being a model or actor is selling yourself, or rather your image. To many people, the notoriety of being a celebrity is a symbol of success. They represent the things, or portray the personality traits that attract them, so they in turn want to emulate those same things in the hope of attracting others like them.

Maybe I’m just not that cool but nothing impresses me more than originality. It’s ok to show a little influence but to flat out copy someone or something is pretty lame. Stick with being a free thinker, I wish more people were concerned with such things.

I have no respect for junkie or unpatriotic celebrities. I have a personal Hollywood boycott going on right now.

because people have nothing better to do than dream about how their lives would be if they weren't who they are, or maybe because they think their love life will be better if they dress ,look or behave like someone more glamorous
