Get a new pediatrician! Any baby under 2 months of age that appears ill should be seen immediately ! Babies under 2 months should not have colds or be coughing. The baby can become dehydrated quickly. If the pediatrician won't see him today, go to the ER ASAP !

Oh, and don't listen to the receptionist at the doctors office. I bet if the doctor himself heard the baby was ill, he would see him today. Ask to speak directly to the doctor!

A 23 day old baby *should* sleep a lot! Otherwise, if your baby has trouble/rapid breathing, a high fever, bluish skin, or a rapid heart rate you should take him to the ER as that is considered an emergency. If he coughs up pus or blood it is also an emergency and you shouldn't don't wait for your appointment tomorrow.

If he is congested he may not want to eat much because he can't breathe comfortably through his nose. Try to keep him as hydrated as possible as a possible side effect of pneumonia is dehydration in a baby so small.

Also, you should have a nurse hot-line (either through your insurance or with the hospital where you had your baby) you can call and someone there can help you determine if you are having an emergency or if it can wait for your appointment tomorrow.

Can you send someone out to buy a vaporizer and some other things. I also like these things that are called Vapor Plugs. You put a little menthol strip in a slot and plug it in. It's a night light as well and the strip lasts about 8 hours. Also, buy some Vicks and put it on a cloth, fold it in half, with the Vicks on the inside so it doesn't get on his skin, and put it between his undershirt and sleeper. Do you have an aspirator--the squeezy suction thing that you put in the baby's nose, squeeze the bulb and its sucks the mucous out. You have to make sure you keep the bulb rinsed and dried. Let him sleep in his car carrier so he is propped up to some extent. Give him some room temperature bottled water to help wash out the mucous. We used to give the babies sugar water, but I don't remember to proportion. Pedialyte (sp) is what is used now. Good luck. I wouldn't give him any kind of meds, just try to make him comfortable. You might want to take him into the bathroom with the door closed and run the shower until the room gets steamy and give him his bath in there. You can buy some menthol baby bath soap (it's in a plastic bottle) that may help with the breathing as well. Make sure you dress him in the warm bathroom and dress and cover him before you take him into the other room so he doesn't get a chill. Good luck and God Bless.

Obviously, if his breathing is really labored, take him to the ER right awa.

OMG!

Did you tell the nurse your son's symptoms?!

Those are signs of a virus maybe even RSV which can be deadly to babies under nine months. The younger the worse it is. That nurse ought to be fired if you told her what was going on and she's making you wait. This is serious.

A newborn should NOT be coughing or have congestion.

Please, take him to the ER.

My friend lost a baby in December (4 months) to RSV. And, my neice has been battling it for two months.

FYI: A baby with RSV will not always run a fever. My neice never did neither did my friend's. If you wait until breathing is labored and your child is blue that is way too long!! Can you imagine buckling your blue baby in a carseat when she has labored breathing?! Then driving 20 minutes to a hospital?! That "student" needs to go back to school.

Honestly, I would call back and tell them that I am coming in, or go to the ER. You need to find out if RSV was the cause of 2 year old's pneumonia. RSV is very common and contagious, and is often the cause of pneumonia and can result in death.

DID THE DOC'S OFFICE REALIZE THAT YOUR BABY WAS ONLY 23 DAYS OLD? At 23 days your baby will not be strong enough to fight this off and may need oxygen therapy, steroids, and/or antibiotics to fight secondary infection (pneumonia) not to mention fluids for dehydration. GO NOW! Best Wishes!

PS: When you call you may want to ask if you can avoid waiting with other patients. Can you be placed in a room immediately? Can you wait in the car? Remember hand washing, take some germ-x or something similar. I took my preemie twins through the back door of the Peds office until they were 2!

Keep a close eye on getting any sort of fever, check rectally if the baby feels hot and take to hospital if the baby is above 100.4. Also pay attentino to his breathing! If his color changes at all or if he is wheezing call the doctor, this is a sypmtom of RSV which is way too common, this is when they should let you come in no matter what and ER is second choice. If it's just a runny nose or even a cough you can hold off... but mother's intuition is also very important, if you feel something is wrong, dont take any chances. Make sure hydration is well too, wet diapers often...

basically confirm he's getting quite some milk so he does not get dehydrated. you are able to attempt putting him interior the bathing room mutually as you're taking a shower. Steam generally enables unstuff infant noses and simplicity coughing. in any different case, you're doing what you'll be doing-- sucking out the snot. that's beneficial to %. up some saline nostril drops, too. it may help harm up congestion and soften obdurate boogers so they are greater trouble-free to eliminate. If there is not any fever and the snot is sparkling, there is not any reason to take the infant to the ER. call the checklist for the time of place of work hours.

Keep an eye on baby's temperature - a cool bath (even a sponge bath) can help manage a fever.
Pay attention to the number of wet diapers. Should be 8-10 every 24 hours. Keep offering fluids - water and breast milk/formula. If baby stops wetting, you need to go to the children's hospital right away. Babies this young can dehydrate very quickly, so don't mess around.

If you need more medical advice, call the mother/baby unit where you delivered. The nurses there should be able to help you.

Call your pediatrician back and remember they will always squeeze you in if your baby is running a fever. I would say the baby has a high fever they will get you in today. If the baby does get worse take him too the emergency room.

Mine had pneumonia and RSV at just under 4 months. She had the same symptoms that you describe your son having.
Get him to the doctor or hospital ASAP.
I can't believe his pediatrician didn't fit him in or suggest taking him to the hospital.
Call them back and describe in more detail what is going on, and insist on an appointment.
