I know my car is low on Transmission Fluid because I have a small leak in the pan but I was wondering how long my car will go without it before it screws everything up?

Please dont tell me to get it as soon as possible, I already know that and I am going to get some today. I just forgot all about it until today.

Also, when I turn me car on now all the meters (gas, spedometer ect.) go all the way up and then all the way down and then to where it should be at. What does that mean? Or could it be just because of the cold?

1st off, most transmissions will last for a long time, but without fluid is just a matter of time. Metal on metal...Just guessemating..don't go too far before you replace the fluid or you will replace the trans. before you replace the pan.

2nd, depending on the year and model of car, most newer cars guages will perform in this manner because they are resetting to zero or calibrating to give you an acurate reading.

3rd, get your transmission fixed as soon as possible before any real damage occurs...sorry, had to put this in.

It depends on how low you let it get. If it gets so low that your gear shifts are affected then every time you experience that its damaging the transmission. Unless you are going to stay on top of checking your transmission fluid and replacing it every single day (because inevitably the leak might get worst) then you'll have to spare the 30 minutes to go to an oil express or any express oil changing station and have them replace the lining. Otherwise, continuing with it low will result in damage to the transmission that will not be solved by fixing the leak by the time you get to it. No one can tell you for sure because we don't know how low it gets and how long you drive it low or whether or not you replace the fluid quickly when its low.

Secondly, the meters going up sounds like an idle problem not a transmission one. After while it'll start idling so hard and so fast that your car won't start. Separate problem.

if your car is that low on fluid it will not shift properly. you will feel a delay in the shifting and might take a couple seconds to engage when put into drive or reverse. Not a good idea to drive you car if the vehicle is low. best thing to do is to get the leak fixed. Also a tip if they ask you if you want a tranny fluid flush i would not recommend you do so. i have heard of many transmission failing shortly after flushing. all the small metal particles will get back into floatation and get into the torque converter and mess up the tranny. best thing is to drain and change the filter. good luck hope your car is OK. and don't worry about the gages this is normal in many makes of vehicles.

If you were out of transmission fluid, you would not be able to drive because it is used to transfer power in an automatic transmission. If it is low, the stuff sloshes and foams and makes shifting and driving sloppy.

The gauges going to the top and then down is odd if it wasn't doing it before, but some brands of cars, that is normal behavior.

Not good......do not drive your car UNTIL you have the appropriate level of transmission fluid in. You do need to take the car to a repair shop to have the necessary repairs made before you burn up the tranny.
