The largest city in the United States, by population and by physical size, is New York City, New York.
New York City is located at the southern end of New York State and the western end of Long Island.
Specifically, New York City is gigantic and divided into five boroughs. New York City is sometimes used just for one of its boroughs, Manhattan.
The boroughs are as follows: Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. Bronx is located at the very southern tip of the mainland, and is in Bronx County. Manhattan is the most concentrated population, is located on its own island, Manhattan Island, and is in New York County. Staten Island is less populated, is located on its own island, Staten Island, and is in Richmond County. Queens and Brooklyn are both on Long Island (western portion), respectively in Queens and Kings Counties.
The East River separates Manhattan from Queens and Brooklyn. The East River becomes the Harlem River farther north and this separates Manhattan from Bronx. The Hudson River passes between Manhattan and New Jersey, finally ending at Upper New York Bay, which separates Brooklyn from New Jersey. The Upper New York Bay becomes The Narrows, then Lower New York Bay. The Narrows separates Brooklyn from Staten Island. Only a tiny creek separates Staten Island from New Jersey. The Lower New York Bay is a section of the Atlantic Ocean, south of Long Island. Long Island Sound separates the mainland from most of Long Island.
Think of this: Manhattan is 13 miles north-south and 2.5 miles east-west. Bronx is 6 miles north-south and 9 miles east-west. Queens is 10.5 miles north-south and 13 miles east-west. Brooklyn is 12 miles north-south and 11.5 miles east-west. And Staten Island is 14 miles north-south and 9.5 miles east-west. Staten Island is big but sparsely populated. Manhattan is narrow but densely populated. This is all for New York City. The entire size is 25 miles at its widest point across Staten Island and Brooklyn, and 36 miles at its tallest point across Staten Island, Manhattan, and Bronx.
That really is HUGE!
