Good question. The Mac iBook is a good value. I have never heard anything negative about Dell, but they are much more expensive than necessary & they will work hard to get you to upgrade everything.
There is not nearly as much software available for the Mac. Windows is the standard (by far) in business, governement, education and personal. Too bad.
Mac is a superior product and operating system, but it holds a very small market share.
Look at sony VAIO or Toshiba instead of Dell. The way prices have come down, upgrades are not all that necessary anymore. I've had 2 Toshibas and 2 Sonys, plus lots of desktops.

If by iBook, you mean should you buy an older second-hand Mac or a new Dell, then by the new Dell and stick Linux on it (Dell have been known to refund the cost of the Windows licence)
If you mean a new Macbook / Macbook Pro, or a Dell, then go for the Mac. It runs on an Intel chip so you can stick Windows on it if you like (either as dual boot or in a virtual machine) plus, OS X is absolutely brilliant (and that's not just me being a zealot).
If you play games, then get the toy OS, but if you do pretty much anything else, get Mac or Linux (which do also play games, just not quite so many)

Apple iBook -
Vista is over rated, potentially got bugs, technical support in limited and users are having to guess how to run operations.
Plus many application such as Itunes don't even work with the new Vista, so I would give it a while.

The iBook is really nice. If you financially decide to go for the cheaper Dell, load in Linux as a second boot. A Linux/Windows dual boot setup is great. There are easy to use Linux versions like Xandros, and free ones that you download off the net like SUSE. If possible, get the DVD .iso version off the net and burn Linux to a DVD, it's better than 5 or 6 CDs.

Apple i Book
We have been going through this choice at Home, and If you want a Unit with Functionality, and not incredible disfunctionality, then a iBook, or MacBook of your choice is a Great Buy.

It all depends on your comfort level of apple computers. If you have a great comfort and technical skill level, an apple might be right for you. For most people, it is not.
Dell is an excellent computer manufacturer. You can get a great deal with their site specials and coupons. There is a 20% off coupon at http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html until 2/15
Good Luck.

From journey i'd flow with the Dell. They help the homestead windows working equipment that's probable greater properly suited than the OS X that mac use. whether it relies upon incredibly on your selection. Macs are supposedly greater valuable for snap shots, video enhancing and homestead windows can do the two gaming and media. get a dell
