You being a better dancer than your partner or your partner being more experinces than you..

I've always found it easier to dance with a lead that is more experienced than myself. A good strong lead can make ANYONE look great on the floor. As a follower, I just follow his lead and hang on for the ride.

Well, it depends on the purpose of the partnership. If it is social dancing, it is a lot of fun for the follower to dance with a better leader. However, I don't know if the leaders enjoy it as much and have heard the leaders complain about it. I guess it all depends of how much worse of a dancer she is: if she's only a little less expericenced, that it's probably OK, if she's totally clumsy compared to him then it's probably no fun for him either. Please note that I don't mean the borderline cases where dancing meets dating. In these cases some leaders love to teach and some followers love to be taught.

However, if it is a competitive or professional partnership it is pretty important that both partners are close to each other in their level. Otherwise, it is getting very frustrating very quickly. I'm speaking from experience. If the follower is better then she feels limited by his skill. If the leader is way better then the follower feels deficient, and rightly so, and he in turn feels limited. Leader is in a better position to make the whole partnership look better, but deep down they both feel unsatisfied.

I for one am always trying to improve, so I think that having an experienced partner is a good thing. They can show you new things, and though that you get better.
