an appearance notice is an official notice telling a person that they have to appear in court at a specific time and place to answer to a criminal charge. Usually, a police officer gives you an appearance notice. You may receive a summons in the mail. If the person, or someone acting for the person, does not come to court when the notice requires, a warrant may be issued for the arrest of the person

Daisy is correct in so far as a criminal case. A notice to appear (Summons with Complaint) may also be issued in a Civil case. If it is small claims court, initially it will be mailed out to your last and usual address. If a second notice is needed, due to your failure to appear, or in civil cases, involving a larger sum, it will be delivered by a Constable or Deputy Sheriff.
