I'm getting ready to purchase a new computer. My main interest is in digital photos, exactly how much memory and ram should be on a new system to handle alot of pictures?

get as much as your budget will allow.

there are plenty of options for storage, not only the internal HDD, but you can have USB flashdrives, external hard drives, etc for reasonable prices. These can store literally thousands of photos ( depending on the photo resolution ).

The RAM memory is not so much a factor; 512MB should be plenty enough, but get 1 GB if you can afford it.

I use an external USB drive of 250GB to store ALL my photos, and have not even used up 10% of it. It is a good solution as you can bring the drive around when travelling , etc.

Memory and Ram are the same thing.
You mean Hard drive space and Ram.

I would suggest a minimum of 1GB Ram and around 300 GB hard Drive.
Should be plenty, more than enough, however expect the budget to be around £600 or $1,000 dollars.

Truthfully 512 is OK this minute, but with windows and the new Vista system, it calls for 1 gig. If you wish just to down load them, there are other options.
