At first, im not the admin for this computer but i found a way to be the admin because i have a friend at the IT department that has an administrator account and log his username and pass and made my account admin.

when i tried inserting my mp3 player, windows detected it and started installing the new device but can't find the proper software for it.

this is odd because i know that windows XP instantly installs drivers for this kind of this devices. In my computer and some other computer here in the office works fine with my mp3.

I was wondering because of my restrictions but I am already an admin but still can't use my mp3.

what should i do?

Those answers are all incorrect. I am a network admin in a call center, all the computers in a call center are managed under two polocies, one is the network security policy (this is the policy the company puts in place as to what's allowed and what's not allowed to be installed in a system), for example, all my computers at my network run a pre-defined screensaver. Not one, no even an administrator logged in the computer can change that because is part of the group policy for that domain.

Then there is a local computer policy, this would include, the desktop background to customize your seccion and plug ins for softwares such as firefox (Some of the local policies can also be blocked by the group policy that might be in place if the company computer user policy wants to).

In your case, I think that it might work on some pcs and not in others because some of those pcs have not been yet updated with the policy that might be blocking the device you are trying to isntall. Logging in with an Administrator account will do nothing since that account is set for the local computer policy and no the domain policy that can be change from the server controling that domain.

I would stop trying to do this, because even though there ways to install the software, you could get in trouble if the network admin is smart enough to detect the changes taking place at your computer and so could your friend.

Good luck. I hope it helped.

Some times just having the log in does not make everything work. The USB may be blocked on the computer or even disabled. I know that at the call center I worked at that is what they did so no matter what you did you could not get anything to work unless they reimaged the computer and changed that setting when they re due it. If your friend is in the IT department ask them what they think it is. Also if you have a disk for the mp3 player at home try to bring that and install or go online and find the drivers since you are admin you should be able to download anyting. Just watch what you do you do not want to get anyone introuble because of something you did

If your computer lost the driver for your mp3 player you need to reinstall XP, if you don't have a sperate disk with a driver on it. Talk to your IT friend and see if it is possible to do that.

I agree with Chic. For whatever reason, your work machine doesn't get along well with USB.

As for what you should do: back off trying to install the MP3 player before you screw up the computer and get yourself **and** your friend from IT into hot water.

Multiple problems could cause this, I suggest cleaning the USB outlets and re-installing the drivers. If this doesn't work, bring it your local repair shop.

wow...that's a long question for a very simple answer...your computer at work is too old to support USB.
