There are several types of irony. Verbal irony is when you say something other than what you really mean [not lying] Situational is when you expect something to happen, that doesn't. Or in plays, when the audience knows something that the character doesn't.

Alannis Morrisette- "Isn't it Ironic?" is a great song that will show you-
One of the verses talks about a man-
was afraid to fly.
He packed his suitcase, and kissed his kids goodbye.
He waited his whole damned life,
to take that flight-
and as the plane crashed down, he thought,
"Well, isn't this nice?"

And the part about-
It's meeting the man of my dreams, and then meeting his beautiful wife.

You get it?
It's that one thing in a situation that you almost wouldn't expect, but then it shows up and makes you say,
"Yeah, that figures."

Ironies are things that happen simultaneously and share an unexpected/unusual tie.

Example: I pull a rumproast out of the fridge and fart at the same time. (It is ironic that farts come out of a rump, and I farted while i was getting a rump roast. Which happens to have the word rump in it!)
