I live in Texas and go camping with my kids and grandkids a lot. Scorpions you can see in the back yard. Rattlers are few and far between. Have seen a few cottonmouth water moccasins around streams and caught a couple of them in my chicken house but haven't seen a rattler in many a year outside a zoo or a rattle snake roundup event. I have never seen a Tarantula in the state although I suppose there are some. At any rate the snakes and spiders are not something you should let keep you from enjoying the great outdoors. Fresh air and wide open spaces are refreshing to the soul. Brown recluse spiders are the deadliest in the U. S. They usually are found in dark, secluded places and are quite rare.

Depends on where in the SW you go camping. Rattlers are common, but only if you travel off of the beaten path. I've see a few rattlers while hiking/camping in Cali, but they were well over 10ft away when either: a) I saw them; b) they started to rattle.
