ok the altneator and battery are 6 months old, they worked perfectly up till a week ago,
now as i drive the dash lights come on, the headlights are dim but are there just and after half an hour the indicators dont work.
its had a new ignition system 4 weeks ago which means it now works on a toggle switch and a push button starter and the diesel pump is wired up differently as it stopped working a wee while ago?

any good ideas? only sensible answers please

Soo could it be a relay switch breaking down ! or something to do with the fuse box!

Get a meter and check battery voltage. Start the engine and rev it a little and see if the voltage rises. If not you have charge problems. Put the meter on the output of the alternator if that is showing good voltage then you need to check your wiring circuit also check your belt tension although if it was slack it would squeal. If the alternator is showing charge take a wire straight from the alternator to the battery that should then charge your battery. Your new ignition switch might be causing the problem. At night when you have finished using your car disconnect the battery and check the voltage at night and in the morning to see if the battery is faulty.

Check for a short circuit in the wiring that was touched during the last works. Also check that the alternator is working as it should be and that the battery isn't too big in amps for the alternator. Cause if you install a bigger battery than the alternator can handle, then you will have an overload on the alternator and eventually it will get burned from the inside (armature). So check the specifications of the alternator and how much current does it produce. Then match them with the battery specs.

more information is needed to attempt to resolver this problem except in very general terms, what make of vehicle is it , what model is it, may we assume it's elderly as it's had a new battery and alternator fitted.
Purely from the description given i would ask if any welding has been carried out on the vehicle prior to the problems materialising, as the symptoms you describe closely resemble the benefits of using an electric welder on a vehicle without disconnecting the battery lead and removing the block connector from the alternator.
This has the effect of burning out the diode pack in the alternator or control box, damage can also be caused to the regulator
unit, and judging from your description of dim headlights etc the alternator is not charging the system. get a clip on amp meter and put it on the battery input lead check which way the needle moves when you turn on the headlights, turn them off start the engine and if the needle moves in the opposite direction the circuit is charging if not you have found part at least of your problem.

It may be worth getting a new battery or at least get it examined. The battery may not be able to hold so much charge anymore. You turn it off in the evening and by the morning it may be drained on e.g. car alarm, even the clock. One way to try and make a difference is make sure everything (radio, heater, etc) is off before turning off the car for the evening, or even not use them during the journey home as then there is less use for the battery and therefore it is mostly charging and there may be enough charge to start it in the morning, but these do not solve the problem. But it may be worth getting a check on the battery, or a new one altogether.

I had a problem like this about 10 years ago.As i was driving everything was starting to go dead as the battery was discharging due to a bad earth connection on the earthing strip on the bulkhead.It took an auto electrician 4 hours to track down the problem.Hope this might be of some use to you.Good luck mate!

You have a short circuit some where that is discharging your battery. I would look at what ever work was done last and have it checked out. If the fuel pump was wired differently and then you began to have problems then voila! You have your answer.

get hold of a voltage tester , battery voltage should be 12 to 13 volt when fully charged and the engine switched off

start engine and rev to about 2000 rpm voltage should go up to around 14volt if no check alternator

Sounds like the alternator is not working, I would recheck the wiring to make sure all the new wiring is feeding the proper circuits when running.

Yeah you have a brand new short in there somewhere. I'd also check recent work. Another thing to look at is the charging relay.
