This is a quote from the Miriam Toews book "A Complicated Kindness". My teacher sent me this quote in an email and told me that it might help me right now. I am stumped as to what it means and it's driving me crazy. Help

I've read the book, though I don't recall the quote.
The situation in the book is that an Amish family has been torn apart. The mother and one sister have left the Amish community, apparently because the girls musical talent isn't compatible with Amish way of life. This leaves the father and other sister bereft, missing them.
I guess that this is the situation of being homesick at home. The house is not a home with the mother and sister gone.

It is normal to be seasick at sea, but it is not normal to be homesick when you are home. You are only homesick when you are away from home, missing it. So, when you feel homesick at home, it means that there is something wrong or lacking in your "home". It could also mean similar things, like being in a relationship yet feeling lonely, or having a "great" job but feeling unsatisfied about it.

I think Cazz answered the questions pretty thoroughly, but you might also refer to the song "Homesick" by Soul Asylum, which says, "I am so homesick, but it ain't that bad, cuz I'm homesick for the home I never had."

I would say the "home" in both quotes refers not to a physical place, but to a sense of belonging.

For me, happiness is attainable interior the little issues. i assume i discovered a thank you to be happy as quickly as I found out that regardless of what's occurring exterior me, i will administration how I react to it. whilst happiness is inner, it won't be able to be taken away. How we react to our errors, suffering (and we are able to go through, regardless of inner happiness--it relatively is component to lifestyles), and joys displays our character. we are basically meant to be happy if it relatively is something we pick and as creatures of loose will, it relatively is a decision we ought to make.
