Start in the mailroom or any other entry level job at a firm your interested in.

It depends what you plan on designing. If you were planning on designing highly technical things which would need to be drawn out of modeled and have stress analysis etc. performed on them then i would say you need engineering degree as it would be a tall order to learn all that by yourself. If however you want to invent simple good ideas then a degree in product design would be ok.
