We want to install a mail slot rather than a mail box. We want to find out if US postal service will accept this - is there a minumum slot size? Must the slot open inwards, not outwards? It may sound weird, but we don't want to cut a hole in the porch to find out its wrong. And we don't want to inconvenience our mail man. I will be asking our mail man next time I see him, but it's nice to also have the official word. I searched USPS.com already, to no avail.

Yes I found some online, like the post with the link to stacks.com. But that's $120 - even more reason to know it is a officially accepted mail slot.

I looked through Lowe's 8 pages of "Mailboxes and accessories" - NO mailslot, lots of boxes and hardware. Yes they explain how to install one....but I have still not found one on their site. They exist on the web for lot of money. I found one cheap one, but it opened outwards and was terrible quality. If you find a link to a decent product, please include the link. And thanks for the links so far!

I don't know of any limitations on the size of mail slots. BTW Lowes will not only sell you a mail slot they will give you the plans on how to install it. http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=howTo&p=Improve/InstMailBxSlts.html&rn=RightNavFiles/rightNavHowTo

I just searched on "mail slots" and put USPS outside the quotes. Some are specifically designed for U.S. residential delivery.

http://www.stacksandstacks.com/html/5425_mail-slot-deluxe.htm is an example.

While I'm sure most letter carriers would rather shove a hand into your box, I'm sure some are attracted to slots.

Mail will flow on Sundays from city to city, yet generally should not be extra. except the sender offered a monitoring quantity on your equipment, you will no longer have the skill to locate it en path.
