As far as your mother's story, she is either making the story up to scare you, or was lied to at some point and took the lie to heart. Marijuana cannot be laced with LSD, as LSD is a very sensitive molecule that is destroyed with exposure to heat. In fact almost every story of people smoking laced marijuana is a lie or myth of some sort, especially stories of them not knowing it was laced. The only drugs commonly put on marijuana are PCP and cocaine, and both produce a thick harsh smoke that tastes like burning plastic instead of marijuana, and numbs your mouth and throat.
Yes you really hallucinate on LSD. For the most part the changes in your visual perception are things like walls and floors pulsating, undulating, and flowing; patterns moving and growing, plants crawling and growing; colors becoming extra bright; the colors of objects, especially white objects, transitioning from one to the next like an animated rainbow; and after-images of any objects that move, that look like translucent ghost-like projected trails.
When you close your eyes, the visuals are even more pronounced. Your imagination brings complex colorful 3 dimensional scenes to life. Visuals often tend to be dominated by flowing fractal imagery - search for "fractal" on Yahoo image search for examples.
If you want more information on LSD, especially the non-visual aspects of its effects, which are the most important parts, definitely research LSD on erowid:

I used to trip a lot. What happens varies tremendously! It depends on exactly what you take (mushrooms, LSD, mescalin) how much, and your surroundings as well.
Everything that your friends said can be true and more. Sometimes everything just looks a little distorted (kinda like you have clear pinwheels spinning in front of everything). Sometimes when you close your eyes you have explosions of colors. I never saw pink elephants dancing down the street or anything that dramatic. All of your senses are amplified. Sometimes you just feel like jello.
It can be scary sometimes. I always freaked out if I saw blood, even just raw meat. I have seen people run out into the middle of the road during rush hour before. It can mess up your logical thinking A LOT! Sometimes it can last way to long too.
If you do decide to try it, be sure of a few things. Have a controlled environment, know everyone there, start with very little, do it with someone that knows what to expect, and expect the unexpected.
I don't do it anymore. I had a couple of scares. I do warn you against starting. It can be a blast at first. It can be an addictive escape from reality, and dangerous. Please be smart in all of your decisions!

If you were going to take LSD I would strongly recommend that you do it with a GOOD friend who has done it before and is accustomed to its effects. Doing it by yourself is not a good idea the first time that you do it. The first time I did it... I was in the accompaniment of my friends and was well taken care of. The emotional side effects are something that many people have to deal with and having a companion that is sympathetic to your outlook is well advised. Do not drive. Do not smoke it. Do not operate machinery. I would advise against going into public. Television and music should be at hand. Just create a controlled environment if you wish to pursue this. Be advised that it is an illegal substance. But if you have to do it... to place your own mind at rest... do it with responsibility and with a partner... if not two.

The effects of LSD mimic the delusions of schizophrenics. There's nothing spiritual about that.
All of the examples of LSD "trips" you mentioned are what really happens. The problem is, you never know how it's going to affect you personally.
I took it once, out of "curiosity" like you want to. Let's just say, I never took it again. I didn't have what you'd call a BAD trip, it's just that it lasted so long that after a while I actually got bored with it, and then I got irritated because I was so out of control of everything I was seeing and feeling and it was no longer fun. And then, there's always the risk of flashbacks...which I had. When you least expect it or want it, it's possible to experience the effects of the hallucinations....entire rooms "breathing", distorted faces of people you look at, etc...
Like I said, there's nothing spiritual about it. Direct your curiosity to something more constructive.

I would not recommend LSD because it is not quality drug in this time era. Now in the 70's we were able to get good quality LSD. The hallucinations where very intense. One trip I took was like walking thru a pyramid.. I saw Jesus on a cross. I saw streets paved in gold and jewels. I saw a golden woman. Time was distorted. I recommend mushrooms and peyote for tripping now a days. Also you want a good place and guide for this type of activity. It can be a life changing expierance. Again donot use any pill cause you don't know what its is and that isnot positive.

It is not really that big of a deal.
Just don't do anything around people you don't trust completely.
It was my first encounter with the idea that we are all connected, all parts of the same source.
If you want to know more email direct because this is not legal where I live and I don't want this type of info in this public of a format.
Love and blessings Don

Lyseric acid diethylamide is a potent mind-altering chemical that is capable of inducing depersonalization and frank hallucinations in a state that in many way mimics acute schizophrenia.
Avoid it.
If you want spiritual adventures, take up meditation or icon painting.
