Check around on it. The card is built in. Many laptops come with wireless cards built in. My Dell Inspiron 640m has a wireless card. It says so on the specifications and it also has a WiFi LED on the keyboard area. Check on your laptop. You can also check your Network Connections to see if there is any other connections other than your LAN. Also, there should be some bars in your system tray, which will represent your signal strength when you get a router. If none of these signs are present, you may need to buy a wireless card and router. But you'd just need a router if you see any or all of these signs. Routers vary in range, strength, and price. The most expensive one you can find has the best range and strength, and the cheapest one has minimal strength and range. Buy one that will suit your needs, ask the store owner or a techie person that works at the store you are looking for a router at.

Go to Control Panel and click on Network connections. If you have wireless it will be one of the icons. Look at the text below it. It usually says whether it's Wireless 'G' or 'N'. Unless of course the drivers were never installed. This is not likely if you use Windows XP SP2.

If you have a wireless card and the drivers aren't installed, there will be a yellow yield sign in your Device Manager list.

A wireless N router is usually backwards compatible, so you may want to spend a bit more on a wireless N router. You'll get more range, speed and higher encryption. You can upgrade your notebook wireless card later.

If the notebook wireless card is G, then you can get by and save money with a wireless G router, but be sure it is WPA capable. WEP security encrytion is not safe. The notebook wireless card has to be WPA capable as well.

You can tell by going to Settings (or as it's called Control Panel) then going to System and going to Hardware and looking at the Network tab...as for cost, the price varies widely and dramatically. Like, you could get one for around $150, depending on what you want to do with it...
