It is society!! People think everyone should be thin, beautiful, and smart. It seems to me that they all think that everyone should look and act like everyone else. If that happened we all would basically be robots. They dont realize this world would be a very boring place if everyone acted and looked alike! I am a girl who is on the heavier side, and no matter what I have done (diet change, exercise) nothing has helped me loose the weight. Society thinks that heavy people do not do anything to help themselves, but we do, some people just can not change how they look-Some people like the way they look and Society needs to DEAL WITH IT!!

It's a society thing, for some reason the people who have never had a weight problem think it's like a sign of weak character of something. I have a few heavy friends, and they know exactly how other minorities feel when they get hated for no good reason! It's just being ignorant and mean, I think.

The common misperception is that heavy (fat) people are lazy, self-indulgent whiners. Some of us are, but to characterize us all that way is grossly unfair. For instance, even among health professionals, it's thought that Type Two diabetes is always a complication of obesity. My own (former) physician neglected to note in my files that I developed diabetes while at normal weight, and that it was only after I was put on insulin injections that I ballooned to 300 pounds in just over seven months! Medical science is beginning to recognize that obesity is a very complex problem demanding a lot more research and investigation. The public typically will be much slower in accepting that being fat does not mean I'm a lazy slob. Oh yeah, excuse me - gotta go take my insulin. Dang....

It pisses me off that if someone is underweight and anorexic, it's "oh you poor thing" and bundles of medical treatment and sympathy, but if you are overweight it's "your own stupid fault you fat bastard" and you are made to feel stupid. Well doesn't that make you want to go off and eat a large bag of chips ? Great way to treat obese people, I don't think. As Dr. Phil would say "How's that working for ya ?" - and I would be inclined to add the rider "you dumbass". It's supposed to be my choice to be fat ? How stupid does a person have to be to believe that ?
We are still living in the dark ages with respect to obesity. Obese people are probably the only group of people left that it is considered okay to take the piss out of.
I used to smoke. I had the willpower to give up smoking in a heartbeat. It was easy because at the end of the day you don't have to smoke. And they say giving up smoking is hard.
But you do have to eat, and controlling something that you can't get away from is next to impossible.
But what do I know, apparently I'm just a stupid fat guy who breaks chairs, is sexually unattractive and eats all the food at a buffet.

Since 2/3 of the American population is overweight I can't imagine anyone being much against heavy people. Except skinny people, I guess & in that case I think it goes both ways. I'm not overweight at all, but I know plenty who are & more than once I've heard women talking about that " skinny *****".

Overweight people are often seen as undisciplined and lazy, among other things. These predjudices are not usually conscious decisions--they are ingrained through out our culture. Many people believe that if someone really wanted to lose weight, they would--just stop eating so much or get up and exercise. They completely ignore or are unaware of issues like low self esteem, emotional eating, food addiction and health issues with exercising.

I have nothing against heavy people, its their decision.
But its not right to promote that kind of lifestyle for the general public. Being heavy will make you more prone to diseases such as diabetes and heart attack, can you imagine what will happen if the whole of American population is heavy?

I would imagine because much like smokers, alcoholics or any other type of addict they eat up (no pun intended) a disproportionately large amount of our health care dollars. We ALL pay for this in the long run through higher premiums or the taxes for the county clinics they'll be utilizing.
I do realize some obese people have medical issues. Fine. If you experience sudden weight gain with no change in eating/exercise habits - get thine chubby @$$ to a doctor! You need your thyroid checked and several other tests, I'm sure. If they find nothing wrong with you, get a second opinion. If THAT doctor finds nothing wrong with you, start keeping a food diary, eat less and exercise more. Bet ya lose weight if you are HONEST with yourself.
I have a couple of friends who are VERY heavy. They both swear up and down that they don't eat 'much' or 'that much'. I love them both to pieces, but they are dirty liars or straight delusional when it comes to their own eating habits. I've gone out to eat with both of them in the past and noticed that they tend to load up on the fast food if we're grabbing a quick bite. I'm talking at least one full day's worth of calories in one meal. I realize that isn't too difficult to do at a fast food place, but at least stick to apples or some other fresh, raw foods later. Do NOT announce three hours later that you are starving and hit the nearest KFC for a bucket of chicken.
It's that kind of behavior that I find disturbing in otherwise healthy (key words there) obese folks. We, as a society, villify alcoholics. We villify smokers. We villify drug addicts. Why not villify food addicts? They act like addicts, they lie to themselves and others like addicts - they are addicts. If they can't help themselves, they need to get help, quick. It's their very lives at stake and they know it.

They pull up chairs to the buffet table. No sympathy for them. Just put down the cake and walk a couple of miles a day and you'll lose it. I have a couple of friends that finally realized it and now they are in good shape.
Fat people are fat because they eat too much. Are there any fat Somalians? Nope.

I really do not know. I suppose it's because people have their own physical insecurities and when they see heavy people, they are either afraid to become that or it makes them feel better about the way they look.
