If you're talking about drama as in acting- I can speak from my own experience it really helped control my anger into a productive form , improved my confidence and especially helps with memory for revision in future. It also allows different children to take different roles and understand others... i was always seen as an outside and a loner but if i got on stage and belted out a song or acted completely against my character people understood the diversity of me rather than one narrow minded opinion. Roleplaying can help to bring out repressed feelings and get through problems it is used in therapy as well to aid this. However, forced exposure can make children nervous and jittery it needs to be approached delicately in all cases i think.

Although these are my own experiences they are prominent in others./

I have incorporated drama into several teaching situations. I find that it can breed confidence and help shy students overcome barriers. I also believe that, in the right hands, drama can be the most enjoyable part of a school day. Play the right games, do the right exercises, discuss the best dramatic options you've seen - the kids will be eating out of your hands.

I also believe that drama can demonstrate really basic themes in other courses. I have taught history and politics using short sketches. I've used skits as a final project for major units. It's all part of experiential learning.

The benefits of students taking drama in school? Everyone else is saying it helps to build confidence, but there is so much more.
Like being able to get up in front of others and do a presentation, true a form of confidence building; how about basic house maintenance skills, being able to use power tools, learning how to formulate concepts from abstract information, thinking outside of the box, critical thinking skills, understanding clothing design and color combinations. Color combinations for just about anything painting, clothing, lighting designs.
What about the use of music? Understanding what music can or should be used to set a mood or tone for a presentation or event.
Where lights should be placed to create the best overall lighting effect.

Drama is so much more than acting anymore, its sad to see people only think in those terms when someone says "Drama".

I hope this helps you.

The benefit of drama for children is that it enables them to bring concepts to life and will help them role play the decisions that they will make in the future ( both individually - in their head & in groups, that the decisions will affect )
