chuck it and get a new one

If it is a porcelain or plastic 'basement type',just buy a new one for about $3. If it is inside a fixture you may be able to replace it. Better hardware stores, and lighting stores, should have parts.Handyman how to books (from the library) or maybe a web search for information.
