It does sound like a motor. The problem could also be as simple as a small article of clothing caught in the pump. Easy check would be to remove the pump from the motor and try to start it. If it runs then either a bad pump or something caught inside the pump. Remove or replace. If it still will not run with the pump removed from the motor shaft then condemn the motor, transmission or timer. ALL expensive parts! Replace the machine.

a whiripool washer has a small, round, hard plastic or rubber connector between the motor and transmission. it is designed to strip out if the washer is overloaded, so as not to damage the transmission or burn out the motor.look under the washer see if there is any black shavings or dust under the motor.if so, this connector is replaceable in about 30 to 45 minutes. the part is aproxx. 12 to 18 dollars but labor is much higher. probably get it replaced for 80 to 120 dollars.. good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!

I assume that it hums, but doesn't start to turn at all. This would probably be the motor going bad and not being able to turn anymore.

Probably a new transmission. I had the same problem. Your better off getting a new washer.
