Depends. If you go on your own, you won't have to pay a lawyer, so that would be cheaper. However, if you have your lawyer go, he may be able to keep points off of your license. No points = no insurance increase. So, paying a lawyer may cost more up front, but could save money down the line.

Take the plea and pay the fine, UNLESS . . . you are at risk for losing your license and/or your insurance coverage (company may drop you or hit you with a major rate increase). At that point, you may consider getting an attorney, as "assigned risk" rates may be prohibitively high. And, if you lose your license and you are without transportation, you may also lose your job.

usually, it doesnt hurt to plead not guilty, wait for a court date and see if the officer shows up. If he does change your plea to guilty.
