There are three main branches of government that makes up the
core of the US government.
#1 Legislative: the Senate and the House of Representatives,
known as the Congress (origins: English House of Commons
and the House of Lords)
The Congress makes or passes legislation into law, then the
President signs it into law.

#2 Executive: The President and his Cabinet (15 Departments)
along with a domestic White House Staff, and a handful of
administrative agencies, along with the Secret Service to
provide total security for the sitting President, and his family.
The President is charged with enforcing all US originated
laws, and ensuring adherence to these laws.
He is also charged with the preservation, protection and
defense of all organic matter (people) living on US soil, or its
territorial possessions (Puerto Rico, Guam, others)
He also has the responsibilities to orchestrate all US political
affairs within the US Department of State, one of his Cabinets.
The President is also Commander-in-Chief of all US Armed
Forces, combatant and non-combatant.

#3 The Judicial System:
Made up of 8 associate justices, and one chief justice, they
selectively hear all legal matters that have gone totally through
the judicial processes, and have not been able to arrive at a
verdict, so the US Supreme Court is that last rung on the
judicial ladder.
This court is charged with the interpretation of all US
Congressionally passed law, and especially with regard to
US Constitution, and how the elements of the case interact
with the US Constitution.

The rest of the US government is divided into sections or
agencies who have been charged with specific duties, such as
the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) the Tennessee Valley
Authority (TVA) Federal Communication Commission (FCC)
Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) and many others.
