I would recommend getting a passport. Although official US customs rules requiring passports are "officially" for air travel, its starting to be enforced for road travel as well.

To comply with child safety laws, you should find some paperwork documenting your legal relationship with the minor. International child abduction or international flight with a minor is considered serious business under both US and Canadian laws, so you might get asked about what he/she's doing travelling with you (even if it is your own child).

Also, if you have relatives in the US that are hosting you, be prepared to provide their number as references. That will help a lot.

Hi. I'm from Minnesota and I live right on the Canadian border. Right now you don't need a passport yet but you soon probably will. When we are coming home from Canada and back in the United States they always want some form of identification. Like a drivers license. The 14 year old should have some form of identification or birth certificate. Also if the 14 year old's parents are not with him/her then the parents should send a permission letter telling the customs agents that they are allowed to cross.

they will ask you why you are going, if you are going of your own free will, they may ask how much money you have. and how long you are planning on staying,

they will do a quck check of the car unless they think they have a reason to go through it better and/or your belongings
