Attack - sharp and clear "gong-like" attack with high overtones resulting from felt-covered hammer striking near the end of the string.

Decay - "warming up" after the attack from the lower overtones being introduced into the sound. Initial decay is sudden.

Sustain - slowly evolving overtone mixtures evolving over a relatively long, even fading sound. The sound produces a "ringing" quality that is complex.

Release - Either the sound evenly dissapates or the damper is applied to softly stop the vibration. The damped sound is very soft but sudden.

General - the lower strings are more "gong-like" and the high strings are clear and "pearly." In the middle register, the sound is clear and bright.

Striking the key hard produces the higher overtones more clearly in the mixture and thus a brighter, harsher sound. Playing softly produces warm and sparkling sound.
