Fortunately, I'm not even slightly overweight, but some of my friends are. I have never heard anyone call them obese because they're rich and can afford the food.
It's a dumb way to avoid what question ?
So you like South Africa ? Great, but why do you have the need to knock America ?

If you don't live in the U.S., why does it bother you? You think you have a right to insult people and them not get offended? A fat person knows they are fat, they don't need it pointed out to them. South Africa has a few folks rich and a Continent full of starving and you defend that? While some Americans are obese, I promise you our neighbor is not starving or I will make them a plate of food and let them eat with me. Please read your question again and see how rediculous it is.

In general America's population is richer than most area's of the world even today. Our poorest poor are wealthy compared to the worlds poorest poor in terms of resources and aid available to them.
First off please be careful that if you intend to label anyone you too can be labeled as well. There is not one man who walks upon this earth who has not fallen short of standard. So with respect to defense of self, consider it may be the very process of labeling that requires as much offense as the label itself. Beyond that-this:
With respect to obesity it really comes down to how we "Americans" (by which I assume you mean North Americans, predominantly United States citizens) choose to spend our money. Much of our culture centers around a celebration of food in its many forms. What other country would have thought to dedicate entire channels on television to food, or create with in 95% of all television commercials and other advertisements cars and food. Not only that, but look at how many other health issues center around food besides just obesity, those such as bulemia and anorexia. Entire industries are supported by the food we import and produce. We have so much abundance in this country that we really do not know how to manage having quite so much!
Obesity (extremely different from the terms over weight or well rounded), just like bulemia, and anorexia are hard psychological and physiological conditions (some say diseases) to overcome. Many times these conditions require medical intervention. Calling someone obese is extremely hurtful and judgemental. Wasteful may be a better term for our country in general but I would discourage you from actively verbally abusing someone in any of these conditions as it offers little remedy and undermines the efforts to treat such conditions in the end.
Should you care enough about someone to intervene in order to help them overcome there are many resources available.
I hope this anwers your question.

Americans can afford mass quantities of mediocre food at restaurants like Fridays, if that's what you mean. That probably has something to do with it.

Don't debate the reaction. People shouldn't be judged according to looks in the first place.
