which gen ipod is the best? i want to get one second hand will the battery still be ok etc?

Frankly I think they're cheap enough now to not bother getting a 2nd hand one.
It's somethign I wouldn't risk doing anyway - the battery may indeed be dead and it's very likely to be scratched to bits.
For out for a nano - if all you actually want to do is listen to music.

Go to the Apple website shop and look at the officially reconditioned units. All have an Apple guarantee and so you have no worries!

it depends what you like, if you want to watch videos get a video one, if you want it while you're doing sport or a really small one get a shuffle, if you want a small fashionable one get a nano.
