No they are not hard to take care of but they are pond fish so you will need to have a very large pond, nothing smaller then 1000 gallons for koi. If you have never had to take care of a pond then it may be difficult at first until you have a handle on that though. Koi if taken care of properly can live more then 100 years.

They are large fish and cannot live anywhere except in a pond type envoronment with a huge volume of water. They are capable of living a long time. If you have a big enough pond I suggest you buy a book on koi keeping, as large fish they require a lot of food and you need to learn how to maintain a pond with aquatic life in it. Revision: by pond I mean man-made with a liner in a controlled environment, not the lake down the road. You can't just throw them in a natural pond and expect them to compete with the native fish. Also if you live in a cold place and your pond is too shallow you'll need to bring them in for the winter which means big fishtanks.

Koi are indeed a pond fish however with a nice size tank you can keep them in a aquarium habitat. Most Koi live to about 20 years depending water qaulity space and feeding habits. Tank sizes to go with really depends on size of the fish when first purchased but also thinkin of size it may grow too. I would say 3 Koi in a 90 gallon tank isnt bad, but if you really wanna enjoy them in the re natural habitat throw them in a pond, and go buy some goldfish basically same family. Gold fish live better in a tank but there dirty fish they poop alot, Both fish are easy to take care of very easy so easy the only way you can kill them is buy throwing them in a tank with a shark, throwing them in water full of chlorine or not adding any water at all. Good luck on your hobby and if you ever get really involved with fresh water fish upgrade to some african cichlids or discus there really beautiful fish. O yea bettas are easy to maintain too!

I guess it is even. Hard and Easy.
Easy part: Feed them everyday,or every other.
Hard part: Building a pond..if you do it that way. Making sure the filter is fine after like a few months.
And thats pretty much it I guess.

not too hard if you build the pond right. They can live very long.
