If you wanted to make a large purchase in cash, for example, and didn't want the money to take up a lot of room, what is the largest denomination of cash you could get from a bank? $1000? $10,000?

$1000. The larger denominations were never in general circulation, and have been recalled. At a bank, you will not find anything larger than a $100 bill, if that.

There was a time there were $1000, $5000, $10,000 and I beleive $100,000 bills (check wikepedia)- They are still legal tender, but no longer made- right now the $100 is the largest American bill made.

$100 bill is the largest in circulation today. They stopped distributing the larger ones in 1969, though larger bills do still exist, that were issued previously.
